Over the past several weeks the western mudia, led by the New York Slime, has been shrieking -- quite literally shrieking -- that Russia could invade Ukraine, imminently, any moment now... Why it is even likely that Russia might invade....
Could is the past test of can. In English, “he could...” is referred to as the past subjunctive. It is used to describe any grammatical reflection of modal remoteness or counterfactuality. At most, it indicates mere possibility.
Of course Russia could invade the Ukraine. It has done so in the past. It can do it now. It could do it in the future. A comet could strike earth. It could rain tomorrow. An accident could happen on the freeway; in fact, it is even highly likely that it might.
So when the Administration intones that Russia could invade Ukraine in the next day or two, they are not lying. They are not spreading mis-information. They are spreading non-information; junk food for the mind -- which, needless to say, Amurkans scarf down as readily as all the other garbage they have been trained to ingest.
One has to hand it to the Administration and their whores in the press. It is exquisite Orwellianism to excite and outrage the public with an absolutely meaningless statement.
